Today is the first day of a week service in the Bay Area. I am here with 11 other people on Project Serve 2013. In preparation for the trip, we are reading John Perkin's book called With Justice for All. In addition we are studying through the book of Nehemiah and looking at how God called Nehemiah to rebuild the city of Jerusalem.
We stay the night in Walnut Creek at the home of a student from Willamette. They were amazing hosts for the group and showed incredible hospitality.
This morning, we woke up apnd went into the city. After visiting Coit Tower, we went to Glide Memorial Methodist Church. This church has done an amazing job of meeting social need in the community. They have made an incredible effort to address The brokenness in humanity in a personal way. Sadly, they have lost Jesus and turned to universalism. Amidst all of their good outreach among the overlooked and under served, I have found that they have little to offer their souls after feeding their stomachs. It is a tragedy on many different levels.
This evening, after eating dinner at a Vietnamese restaurant, we began walking and driving around the city on a prayer tour. We are learning and getting in touch with the districts of the city, seeking to understand their unique personality and needs.
